    Harissa

Ahhh, spicy food! To say I was a little nervous to try out this spice is an understatement. I do like a little kick in my meals from time to time, but nothing too cookin! More on this later…

At Nanas we have a stella, pre mixed harissa blend. Whilst only needing a little bit per recipe (dependent on your tolerance), and being able to get as much or as little as you like, Nanas is a perfect place to get this spice. Spicy food has a number of potential health benefits. Some of these include increasing the rate of sweating, opening sinuses and encouraging the body to cough up mucus…..making it a perfect natural remedy if you have a cold. Food of the spicy variety may also help the bronchial tubes open. Because of the heat in foods like harissa it also increases the bodies natural metabolism. All good reasons to enjoy this bad boy spice!

So, back to my testing. This week I have had my in-laws visiting. For the first night they were here, I decided to try a new recipe (nothing new) and make something for the blog, using the harissa. Now, as I said I like a little spice, however Tegan and the rest of the gang don’t like hardly any at all. So….I asked around trying to find out how hot our Nanas blend was but couldn’t get any good answers, so I just decided to half the required amount in the recipe. This didn’t work out so well!!! It was HOT!!!!! Whilst the recipe used beautiful ingredients, we just couldn’t eat it! BURN! Therefore, I provided Lauren from work and a mate with the meal to try out. Lauren reports it is beautiful (she must have tastebuds of steel!!) I am too scared to try it again so I’m taking her word for it! So, if you want to make this meal, please only add the harissa to taste, otherwise you will burn your face off!!!

Hope you're all well friends, have a super week, turn up the heat with some harissa, and catch y’all again next blog!

    Harissa Spaghettini

    3 teaspoons of crushed garlic

1 pinch salt (Himalayan Sea Salt from Nanas)

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

    2 tbsps harissa (I only used one….HOT!)

    8 ozs whole wheat spaghetti

    1 bunch kale destemmed

1/2 cup oil cured black pitted olives

    1/2 cup pine nuts (toasted)

    1 lemon

    - Bring a big pot of water to a boil.

    - In a small bowl whisk together the garlic, harissa, and olive oil. Set aside.

    - Generously salt the boiling water, add the pasta, and cook per package instructions. Just before the pasta is done add the kale to the pasta water, drain and set aside.

    - Heat half of the harissa dressing in the now empty pasta pot.

    - Add the pasta and kale, black olives, pine nuts, and lemon zest.

    - Stir over the heat for a minute or so, then turn everything out onto a platter and serve.

    Serves about 4 - 6.
