Ok, this is a straight up disclaimer…..I have been, and still am scared of spirulina….but Ill get to that shortly. First of all, what is it?!

Well spirulina is a green powdery substance that is actually fresh water bluegreen algae. It mainly grows throughout Mexico, Asia, central Africa and surrounding areas. I warn you, it has a VERY strong odour (I liken it to the bottom of the ocean!) and has a beautiful colour you don’t see often. It sprukes many health benefits and for something that is from the ocean is extremely impressive.

Some of the benefits of spirulina include, assisting with eye protection (even preventing cataracts), enhancing your immunity, easing allergies, lowering cholesterol and removing toxins from the body. It is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals including E, manganese, iron and selenium. Also, here is one for you meat lovers…..spirulina is 60-70% of its dry weight in protein!!!! Gold….or green! One of the reasons I REALLY want to like this stuff is because it is incredibly high in B12….a vitamin plant based peeps can often lack in…and honestly, I prefer to get all I can from plants as opposed to the supplement form if possible.

Spirulina comes in a couple of usual ways. Generally, it is found in supplement form (tablet or liquid) or in powder, as it is at Nana's. It can be used in a number of ways ranging from being added to fresh juices or smoothies or sprinkled into salads or dressings. It is also increasingly being seen in raw food bars and cookies.

So, back to the beginning….being scared of this stuff. I WANT to like it….I have tried to like it….but every time we opened it in the shop, Lauren and I would have a good old laugh at the intensity of the smell and how it must taste. I’m sorry my friends, but I just can not do it! I’ve tried it and I just don’t like it! I know how good it is for me and I really want to have it as a part of my diet, but I just cant get over the taste or the smell.

Ok, in saying this, I still highly recommend this product as something you should give a go and form your own opinion. It is an amazing super food and I know your health would benefit from it if you give it a go! So, head on into Nana's, get a little (it is in bulk behind the counter) and give it a crack….it might just be your thing!
