    TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein)

Lets face it…every now and then we all need a little hand eating healthy. Even tougher sometimes, is getting our kids to eat healthy! Mine are pretty good, however, when I find a simple ‘replacer’ to traditional foods, life seems that little bit easier.

I wasn’t put onto TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) until I started working at Nana's. I was using other mass produced meat replacers every now and then but they never really hit the mark. A fellow vegan, who I had met through my previous job, referred me onto TVP and how good and versatile it is….so I had to try it out!

First up, so you know what you’re getting into, TVP is a high fibre, high protein meat substitute. It is made from soy flour and is a dehydrated product. Make sure you take this into consideration when cooking it, or it will remain chewy and not very nice. You can re-hydrate in hot water for about 10 minutes before putting in your dish, or simmer in a normal ‘meat’ dish adding extra liquid as needed. TVP can be used pretty much ANYWHERE mince is used… without the saturated fat! Pies, spaghetti bolognaise, tacos, ‘meat’ loaf….anything you can do with mince, you can do with TVP!

This week was my eldest daughter Pria’s birthday. For her big day, she requested our spaghetti bolognaise. So, I grabbed some TVP from Nana's and got to work. Now, I haven’t included a specific recipe this week as I know everyone likes their bolognaise sauce a little different, however the ingredients I used were : TVP, tomato paste, garlic, vegan Worchester sauce, tinned diced tomatoes, finely diced carrot, onion, chilli, olives, dried Italian herb mix and continually adding enough water to ensure the TVP was soft and dehydrated. Everyone enjoyed it and was a fun way to celebrate my special girls fourth birthday!

So, for something different this week guys, give TVP a go! Its texture, and consistency is very similar to mince, and it will take on whatever flavours you add to it. It will store in the pantry for a long time and is always handy to whip out and create an easy meat free dish, meat lovers will still enjoy! Have a super week friends!
